It's actually rather good. :) I'm only about halfway through but so far I'm enjoying the book a lot more than the movie which actually makes since for me since I love reading more than just about anything else.

xlorp and I were talking today about the hard events in life. Events that smash into your life and leave you bruised and bleeding.  And one thing that became clear to us is that some hard events really are like  train crashes. You have no warning, cannot even imagine how it could happen to you  and then BAM it's done, and over.

Except it isn't done and over. You have to live with it. To say hard events change your life is like saying earthquakes can reshape the course of rivers. They can create a permanent change, a change so huge and unforgiving that you feel helpless and furious and terrified.  But no matter what you say, do or feel, that river has moved and it is not going anywhere.

Which got me to thinking of rivers and all the metaphors we use for life and hope and faith.  Because when I look at the hard events in life, I don't sit there wondering "why me?"  (I may sit there yelling "you mother-effing universe, you couldn't find some *other* place to spread your misery, are you getting lazy or are you just plain stupid" - but that's another reaction altogether).  I don't think there is a cosmic force or God planning our fate, picking and choosing who lives and dies, who celebrates or suffers, or any form of karmic payback plan.  It would be actually nice if there was such  a plan - if we knew with any certainty  that our good deeds would be rewarded, I suspect we'd spend more time being excellent to one another and less time harming one another.  Or at least we'd spend more time looking over our shoulders for that cosmic payback that is coming up close behind.

Nor do I believe that God or the universe measures or doles out the joys and pain (the old "God never gives you more than you can handle" adage - oh boy, do not let me start examining that one in the face of the evil we see and hear every day).  Again, it would be kind to think that there was someone or something sitting at the spigot and keeping an eye on our daily allotment of joy and hell.

What I do believe is this:  even if there isn't anyone minding the spigot or mapping out our lives, there *is* someone who can help us deal with whatever pours out of the spigot, washes down to the river and flows into our house. For some it is God, for others it is the people around them, and for a few it is a hot fudge sundae with pecans and whipped cream.  But there will always be someone out there to help. You may need to open the door to find them, but they will be there waiting for you. 

Hopefully bearing huge hot fudge sundaes and singing hymns.  I like to cover all the bases. Just in case.

Instead of concentrating on homework I'm trying to figure out what would happen if an Angel's "Grace" was stolen and given to Sam and Dean...if it's possible, would it change them completely? Would they go insane? And what the hell would happen to the Angel who's Grace was stuck in the body of two humans?

Also, I can't get this one vid I saw out of my head. So I downloaded the song and am listening to it way too often.

Am I the only one that feels like writing slash fan fiction for romance novels? For example, I downloaded Nora Robert's trilogy about 3 friends who unleash a demon when they are like 11 or 10 and all the boys share the same birthday and each book I'm willing to bet is going to be about each of the boys (who are now grown ups) meeting and falling in love with a woman. But I keep thinking why aren't their romance novels but with guys falling in love with each other instead. It's just I'm more interested in the story of the three boys and what they go through than the romance aspect 20 years later.

I'm beginning to think if I want to read those types of stories I may have to write them myself.

One Point Five, Tops by chash (Jared/Jensen) This was fun and I loved the character voices.

Kaum ist man mal ein paar Tage weg, schon erreicht merlinxarthur die magische Zahl von 1000 Mitgliedern. Yay! Ist Merlin dieses Jahr eigentlich für Yuletide vorgesehen? Bei den Zahlen eigentlich ein Unding, aber wenn man bedenkt, wann die Serie angelaufen ist, vielleicht durchaus noch möglich. Wenn ja, fände ich das zumindest sehr witzig. :D

Aus gegebenem Anlass daher ein Merlin-Meta-Link: The Gayest TV Show this Side of the Subtext. matan4il fühlt darin dem homoerotischen Subtext in verschiedenen Serien auf den Zahn und bettet Merlin damit in einen Kontext, der den Hintergrund für die Analyse des Subtextes in Merlin bietet, welche darauf eingeht, wie "gay" dieser Subtext tatsächlich ist. When people say “it is so gay” about a show, I find that what they usually mean is “the subtext of those two guys only having eyes foreach other is overwhelming”. Of course, it also carries the unstated understanding that those two guys will have to do with the eyes, since their mouths aren’t going to meet.

Woran ich in dem Zusammenhang auch denken musste, ist wie das Vorhandensein eines weiblichen (Slash)Publikums ( jenseits des Fandoms sofort in gay audience übersetzt wird. )

Für mich persönlich macht sich der Subtext der Show übrigens besonders stark in der Gen-Fanfiction bemerkbar, denn wenn die halbwegs in character geschrieben ist, kommt sie genauso slashig rüber wie die Show. Deswegen habe ich beim Ablegen der Links bei fast allen Gen-Storys bisher die Tags "Subtext", "UST" oder "Preslash" hinzugefügt und manchmal auch als Slash ausgewiesene Geschichten in "Gen+Subtext" umgestuft. Das Problem hatte ich in anderen Fandoms nicht!

Zum Beispiel: Rifles - Napoleonic AU (MERLIN, Merlin/Arthur, Gen, Preslash, 2555). Warum ist das nicht länger? Da kommt schon mal ein Merlin-AU-Szenario daher, das für mich funktioniert, und dann ist es so kurz. Ich will mehr! "Clearly you haven't got enough to do, Private. Since you're such aconcerned old maid, you can take these shirts to the river and wash them." He flung a pile of stinking laundry at Merlin and bared his teeth expectantly. "Get on with it!" Zum Glück gibt es auch Slash, der eindeutig als solcher zu erkennen ist, wie das mythisch-magisch angehauchte Sequel zu The Beast of Winter. Diesmal geht es um das Beltane Fest. Kommt mir das nur so vor, oder ist das ein sehr feierliche Fandom? Apropos...

Misrule von thehoyden (MERLIN, Merlin/Arthur, 4330). Mittwinterfeierlichkeiten führen zu unfreiwilligem Crossdressing für Merlin und Arthur ist davon angetan. "Well," Morgana said, looking pleased, "Maybe Arthur won't actually throw the tourney this year."

Zum Abschluss: The Care & Feeding Of Unicorns (1/2) von icarusancalion (MERLIN, Merlin/Arthur, WIP, 4054). Ursprünglich wollte ich warten, bis die Story komplett ist, aber da morgen schon die Folge mit dem Spoiler¹ läuft, ist es vielleicht besser, diesen ersten Teil jetzt schon zu lesen. Es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall!! Merlin wondered what Arthur knew of unicorn lore, but the knowing glint in Arthur's eyes as he glanced from Merlin to the unicorn answered that. Arthur's smile became a warm smirk.

Bonus Vid Rec: Beverly Hills von giandujakiss. Hat bestimmt schon jeder gesehen, aber das hat mich noch nie vom Linken abgehalten. Camelot=Beverly Hills ist ein sehr gelungener Vergleich und das Vid trifft den Nagel auf den Kopf.

3. And last, if you or your neighbors have gardens or fruit trees, see if your food banks will accept donated vegetables and fruit. In fact some communities have 'urban gleaners" that will go and pick your trees.  More here
